Pike Fishing

There is very good pike fishing around the Whitegate and Mountshannon area and pike can be caught here most of the year. There are several large bays that are ideal for pike fishing north and south of Lough Derg Holiday Houses. Pike to over 20lbs (9.07kg) are regularly produced in this area and the occasional 30 lbs + (13.06kg) fish is possible. Lough Derg is ideal for anglers that enjoy the challenge of wild fishing. Most popular methods of fishing for pike include lure fishing and dead baiting. A combination of drifting dead baits behind the boat whilst casting lures to the front of the boat will cover the water and present the Pike with two different bait options.

Coarse Fishing

There is very good general coarse fishing with excellent swims north and south of the houses. These swims yield good catches of bream, roach, rudd and hybrids. We have located several remote shore and island swims close to our houses that are ideal for coarse fishing in this area. Anglers are provided with boats to reach these island swims and then fish from platforms. For more information on coarse fishing please read Steve and Nigels information in the section below.

Shore Fishing:

Williamstown harbour is 1km from our houses and is a good spot for shore fishing. Also, there are some purpose built fishing stands in Twomilegate near Killaloe. In addition to this there is very good bank fishing on many of the stretches of the river Shannon above and below Portumna. The river is very deep here and with good coarse fishing match stretches all the way to Meelick Weir. Portumna is less than a 30 minute drive from Whitegate.

East Clare Lake lands

The East Clare Lake lands comprises of over 40 lakes and rivers. The area is most popular for pike and coarse fishing with abundant stocks of pike, bream, tench, rudd, roach and perch. Most waters are very accessible with car parking close by and purpose build fishing stands have been erected on some lakes to provide greater ease of access. Some of the most popular lakes are Lough Bridget, Doon and Kilgory.

Coarse Fishing - Lough Derg - by Steve Bailey

Steve and Nigel – January 2011

My friend Nigel and I have been fishing in Ireland for over 25 years. Seven years ago we had our first experience of fishing Lough Derg on the northern shores at Portumna. Since then we have tried many different areas until 2 years ago we stayed at Tim Tully's cottages at Whitegate. Never again would we fish anywhere else.

The three cottages are on the shore line of Lough Derg with the boats moored at the bottom of the garden. On our arrival we unpacked our clothes had a cuppa and set off on one of the boats with the fish finder. We could not believe our eyes there was thousands of fish showing. After a few hours scouting about we set the markers just off a small island in 14ft of water and a clear bottom. We pre-baited the swim with corn, wheat and mixed pellets. Job done.

We then set off back to the cottage rang Tim told him where we was going to fish. Tim and his son arrived with one of the purpose built platforms which he positioned in the water where we planned to fish. The following day we woke 4am next, loaded the tackle on the boat and set off ten minutes to swim. We set up the gear which once set up can be left in position, filled the swim feeder, corn and maggot hook bait, cast out to the markers the tip went round straight away.

Over the next 5 days we averaged over 400 pounds of fish a session. This is a virgin area with more swims to be developed. The platforms designed by Tim are fantastic and are put in place prior to your fishing the swims. They can also be pre-baited before you arrive. This area is a must if you want the best fishing on Lough Derg.

Tight lines,

Steve
