1st 26lb 2oz roach on the pole. Laleham.
2nd 23lb 1oz 4 bream +bits. Walton bridge.
3rd 19lb 10oz all gudgeon . Laleham . (bet he's knackered)
4th 19b 8oz roach on the topper, Molesey.
5th 19lb 2oz roach on the pole. Molesey.

the angler counted them as he caught them on a 3m whip in a shallow sandy swim. 704 gudgeon to be precise...........in 5 hours.

Catching loads of gudgeon on the Thames reminds me of a match nearly 30 years ago at Medley. Drew a favourite pleasure peg for roach and chub but didn't know its match form. 300 gudgeon later for 8lbs I found out!

Cracking weights of roach in the match above though.

I was on peg 75 downstream of the Anglers pub (Simon ). One of the pegs on the towpath, with all the bikers speeding down every 2 minutes, made pole fishing a pain in the ar8e, not your fault though C.C. just luck of the draw......

Top catches of roach on a river from top anglers and I will be surprised if it even gets a mention in the angling press!

I think there will be some mention in the AT, Keith Arthur will write something, and Dave the organiser of the whole thing also writes for the AT.....surely 704 gudgeon in 5 hours is newsworthy.

It certainly was Simon, tbh it was in my opinion the best of match, only top weight decided otherwise.
I remember back in my callow "yoof" when here in south yorkshire most anglers were adept at "pimping" -- speed fishing for bits, eyes, silver, call them what you will-- on the Witham and fen drains.
One of the best was Len Roberts, a steelworker who was simply brilliant , mechanical perfection who's rod was a blur when it all came togetheron the day, but its days were numbered when bream began to show up with greater regularity thanks to a certain Jack clayton of Boston.

Nine seconds to land, unhook, (rebait? ) recast between every two fish for five hours.
My finger ends would be in shreds at the end of the match.
Brilliant show of angling !

I think it was Simon willsmore who had all the gudgeon that day. He spent a few years in Italy where they do lots of bleak fishing. Catching lots of small fish is a bit of a forte of his.
The trick is to thread the maggot round the hook so you can catch a dozen or so fish without repairing. Still takes some concentration!
