Touching on memories, you are right. Mike you are not far from the wye. I would suggest you consider a guided trip. It is such a special place that for me it ranks equally alongside the afternoon I spend at Birmingham railway museum driving the flying Scotsman, yes the real one, in '94 which 60+ years before my grandfather drove.

I shall accompany the Maestro when the season begins for a spot of barbel fishing and Gordon and I shall visit the Dane again. I’m a very long way from the Wye Alec being in North Cheshire. One day perhaps as stretches of it are available. I have enough rods at the moment.?

now that trips abroad seem out of the question I am seriously thinking of repeating the wye trip in September, probably with a guide, followed by a few days in Wales. My original thought was Des who wrote in AT.I use my barbel rods for carp. I did buy while I was away this week a very nice frees spirit surface creeper which I plan to use with my carp catcher.

Which one did you buy Alec and have you tried it. There are a few for sale on the bay. Does it feel like a carp rod i.e. a poker?

No. The sportex I bought is an out and out poker at 2.75 so no good for the catcher. I got the hi s surface 11 which is like a hefty barbel, so should be perfect for the catcher. Tuesday will tell.

It all depends on carp size,if fish are up to doubles I prefer a match rod with 4lb line, any bigger then an Avon with 6/8lb line, unless weed and snags are adjacent....

Don't have a problems with snags thankfully but the water I use the peregrine's on seems to have a quantity of carp up to late doubles which get very very angry. It's more usual there to get a fiesty 13/16lb than a single. Even the 1.75 torrix has its hands full normally.

Just an update on this rod,if depths are below 7 or 8ft this is my go to rod,I used it yesterday had several barbel between 5 and 9lbs on 4lb line, the rods action is great for small fish, but superb for absorbing lunges from chub and barbel, fantastic value and a lovely rod to use...

Yes,I was chatting with him yesterday,I use 5.5lb 0.16mm if barbel are the most expected fish to take the bait, only on the float though,on the lead the #### hits the fan on the bite leaving a runaway train hurtling away from you...
