Rockaway Surf SP Rods by Okuma Fishing USA! The original was the 8'6" that i tested 5yr ago!
With me that day was Jeff Konn, a writer for a local fishing magazine Hawaii Fishing News who also tested this rod with me. We latter shared our results with Mr John Bretza, the Director of Product Development for Okuma USA. Thank you John for authorizing Okuma to send me this 10 footer as i already had the 8'6" & 11'. After the initial introduction of the 8'6" model an 11' & 10' were added. So the 8'6" was more for close quarters, the 11' for casting distance & the 10' for bottom jigging from boats to working the shorelines like the other 2-an all around length.
In Hawaii where i first field tested these rods i was targeting inshore species. Jacks & bonefish. In California to Oregon these rods gained popularity for shoreline hunting Sea Perch to Stripers & Halibut. This created an unexpected demand for the longer sizes. So often you'd see the Okuma website to Amazon constantly selling out of these longer sizes. Because of the unexpected Sea Perch demand for these great rods it created a demand for the 2 longer lengths. So i contacted John Bretza at Okuma & he promised to hold a 10ft for me to review once their CA warehouse receives extras. And as always John came through for me! I did find a 11' on Amazon that was a returned item so i jumped on it at a much reduced MSRP.
Recommended reels? The 8'6" i suggest a 4K. You can still use a 4K on the 10' but i'd go 5K. On the 11' definitely a 5K. Remember most 4K & 5K spinners share the same body, only differences is the spool on the 5K is cut deeper to hold more line. So let's look at the stats on the 10' shall we?
