Paul Duffield Traditional Fishing Floats are individually hand-made in the U.K by Paul himself, using natural materials – Norfolk reed, quill and cane. His designs include Avons, perch and grayling bobbers, Nottingham sliders, still-water antennas and many more classic and traditional designs. Each float is sealed with several coats of quality waterproof lacquer so they will last for many seasons of fishing.

Paul has been making fishing floats for almost as long as he has been an angler. He made his first float when he was 12 years old, a crude affair made from a small bird quill that he used for trotting single maggots and casters on a tiny river that among the minnows contained surprisingly big chub. That was over 40 years ago, and since then Paul has made more floats than he can count.

After many years of making floats for his own use and for friends, Paul now offers his floats for sale from his website at Traditional Fishing Floats – Fishing Floats Handmade in the U.K.. Amazingly, the majority of Paul's creations are priced at below £3.00! How bad's that for a unique piece of craftsmanship!

The website has details of an extensive range of floats for all aspects of river and still-water fishing, many based on traditional designs incorporating Norfolk reed, quill and cane. All floats are personally hand-made to order by Paul, so he is able to make any of his floats to your specific requirements, or even make custom floats based on your own designs.

As well as making floats, Paul has written several books on fishing. His first book 'The Beginner's Guide to Coarse Fishing' was published in 2010 and since then he has written several more books including guides to rigs and knots, fishing small rivers and streams and carp fishing for beginners.

Paul also makes traditional fishing tackle such as cane landing net handles, bank sticks and float tubes, as well as restoring vintage cane rods. He has also written books on vintage fishing rod restoration and making your own traditional fishing tackle.

Paul has set up a discount code that can be used to get a discount of 10% off all website orders - the code is fishingmagic which can be entered in the shopping cart before checkout

The second set are very similar to some Ultra floats from the late 70s/early 80s. Still have a few, somewhere or other.

Crow said: "Very nice but I suspect they are out of my price range, by the way the link at the end of the article isn't working for me"

Yes...a spot of bother with that second link, Crow...it'll be sorted - but what wonderful creations these are...a joy to fish with.

Very nice indeed.

A good balance of function and finish without appearing overly fussy, like some seem to.

I always liked those Rob, still see some come up on ebay from time to time usually in collections within (lovely) old wooden float boxes :)

Those floats look well made but...at the risk of sounding like a miserable sod I much prefer modern mass produced floats to handmade/homemade floats. I've yet to see a handmade bolo or avon float to perform anything like as well as a mass produced one.

People keep using thick stems, wrongly shaped bodies, shorter sight tips and always seem to put on thick layers varnish also which does look nice but doesn't aid the functionality of the floats.....ok, ok, so I sound like a miserable scrote lol.

As an example just go check out Dave Harrels range of floats :).

There's a certain satisfaction to be had from making your own floats, but when hand-mades are as cheap as these...it puts the ownership of such items within everyone's reach. Those from the Classic range are cheaper than most of the popular branded floats. Prettier, too.:)

No...I think that's fair comment and I wouldn't disagree. There are some fabulous looking handmade floats around ( and some proper munters) but I do wonder how well they would actually perform. I have a few and I've mde a few but they don't often get wet. I too prefer the performance of mass produced floats. Some of those hand made jobbies look as if they'd need about 4oz of lead to cock.

Don't like the colour schemes of many either. Blue has no place on a float imo....nor do varnished feathers.
