Hi all, first post here, looking to buy a pellet waggler set up, know what rod I want but no idea on a reel and line etc.

Will be using it on a lake where the carp go to 20+

Any advice please on a suitable reel/ what breaking strain line and hooklength please?

Many thanks in advance.

Your choice of rod, make, length and attributes makes a difference to the size of reel , line diameter and hook length you would use . Please elaborate.

Looking at a daiwa matchman pellet rod. 11 or 12 foot. Not casting more than 30m.

I would stick to Shimano or Daiwa in 3000 or 4000 size. In truth a few 5000 size are the same as 4000. There is a Shimano reel for sale on this site. Line capacity will not be an issue and if you get spool reducers, use them. Your rod, which I am unfamiliar with, will have a maximum line rating probably 6lb bs or 0.23 diameter which is ample even for double figure carp. If you are planning on tying your own hooks I would fish straight through. If using hooks to nylon then go with whatever the hook size chosen comes with. Your swim will also determine the line and hook length strength. A snaggy swim with weed warrants greater strength. I think you can now see that a reel with a spare spool is very handy. Your budget will also determine your choice of reel.

With my commercial float rods or Pellet Waggler rods I use either 4lb or 6lb breaking strain reel lines (with 3lb-ish or 5lb-ish hooklengths) loaded onto a Shimano Stradic 4000 rear drag reel or a Shimano-Aero-4000FA front drag reel. Both of which seem to balance well with these rods, however like mike suggested a 3000 sized reel would also be a good size of reel to match these rods as well; and if your reel also comes with spool reducers then to me that’s even better.
