Pike terminal tackle

Just been and got a few bits to start me off but any advice / recommendations on anything I have missed will be welcome.

I have got other floats, crimps and circle hooks that I will get out of my sea fishing bag. I have anti tangle sleeves in my carp box.

I got floats, snips, forceps, trace wire, hooks, swivels, weights and run rings


Anything else?..... ?

Long nosed pliers I find are better than forceps.

Looks all OK. I cant see in the photo but small beads are good between a sliding pike float and a stop Knot. Also on the line below and weight to cushion the knot on the trace. Just like your carp set up.

Yeah good point. I will nick some out of my sea gear. I have a pack of loom bands I use as adjustable stop knots so need those with the float + bead too! ?

Spool of weaker line is always useful for paternoster links.

I would repeat what Steve2 said; Long nosed pliers.

I once became attached to a 19lb pike via the knuckle of my index finger. My Father in law was with me on that day, he was on a visit from Belgium. Unusually for a Belgian he had a poor grasp of English. When we packed the bag I asked him to put in a pair of cutters and he put in a pair of duck billed pliers that are used for bending tin. How pleased I was you can’t imagine. I managed to give a shout out to a bailiff and he brought a pair of cutters. I snipped the treble Hook passed the point back out and we carried on. I was lucky as I didn’t get any infection or ill effects afterwards.

Forceps seem a good idea, but when you have locked them to the hook and your fingers are through the rings, if the pike wriggles or flips then you could be in serious trouble. Pliers give better control, as you have far more leverage and if they should be twisted out of your grip (something that has never happened to me) then you can just go again.

I will get a pair. I won't be using treble hooks. I will be using circle hooks but still no harm in having them.

I watched a YouTube video on handling pike and the boy said to straddle larger pike on the unhooking mat to stop it flipping and rolling.

I will have my old man on hand to help me too.

I watch These guys a lot....

Its a ‘treble hook disgorger’ which you can push down the trace until it reaches the hook(s) and the bulbous shape will keep the flesh away from the hook points as you remove and retrieve the hook. (see pic with a treble in it to show how it works).



I’ve only used mine once or twice in the last ten years or so but it allows me to sleep at night after I’ve had to use it so it stays in my bag just in case.

NB: I don’t like using barbed hooks either and I’ve started using single circle hooks or double hooks on my deadbaits.

I haven’t seen one of those in the tackle shops. I seen one in a video on YouTube. I will look for one online

Personally I think the Fox forceps are the best tool for 90+% of circumstances. Loads more control than long nosed pliers.

The disgorger above is a John Roberts tool. If you don’t use treble hooks then there is no point getting one.

the Fox quick change weights are very good, I have used them for donkeys years.

Along with long handle long nose pliers I also use Fox pistol grip pliers and hook out grip disgorgers. I have the long disgorgers never had a need to use it but most of pike fishing is done with lures. I also use a soft leather glove having had a couple of accidents when unhooking pike. One finger still shows the scars.

Got some storage boxes full of sea fishing terminal tackle in my cabin. Just went to get some crimps out and came across a lovely pair of rapala long nose pliers too!

A nice £20 save! ?

I suggest you might buy a specialist landing net for pike fishing:

I have a large rubber savage gear net I use on the boat for bass and Pollock ?

A small first aid kit, pikes teeth have an anti coagulant coating, nick youself on its teeth (or gill rakers) and it can bleed for a long time.
Make sure those fox rage pliers are kept dry as they are only coated with (???) and can quickly corrode on the surface layer.
They look really cool but stainless ones are much better and corrosion resistant, maybe best keep a little grease for the rivited joint just in case.
If you can find any buy the biggest snap link swivels possible, ideal for kwik changing traces in very cold weather!!

I also have the same net, its OK but no good where any sort of reach is needed.
As Regalis says probably best on a boat.
