Replacement Umbrella?

I need to replace my elderly 50 inch umbrella, the problem being that sizes given by shops and manufacturers are misleading, some quote rib length, or closed length or span over the top or beneath? I've seen advertised 8 spoke 50 inch umbrellas which are basically square - does anyone have one, is the span the same as a normal shaped umbrella or is it better or worse?? If you have a square umbrella what is the span across the sides? Thanks.

I didn't realise square umbrellas were a thing apart from bait type brollies.
I thought they were specified by diameter, I can see your dilemma. Even Da Vinci did not manage to square the circle.
The only brolly I own not measured by diameter is a giant oval jobby - that's about 6' x 12'.

Can be used upright as standard brolly ,
Had mine a few years ,no problems at all with it . Even when it is slotted into brolly tube on my AS1 seatbox.

I also have one of these which I bought from a Dutch site. It has proven to be very reliable. It has a strong ground spike, an innovative spring on the brolly which enables it to be canted at any angle to protect from driving rain. It also features a transparent panel to see through if the brolly is kept low and a zipped panel which when unzipped enables you to cast from underneath just.

I second that plus the 60” space maker by Preston.

I was tempted by the space maker . But decided on flat back.
I would recommend to anyone to get a decent brolly inner with good ground spike if no nolly holders on seatbox or fishing on natural bank .
Gardner do one . It's like a mini auger at the end . Can't remember make of mine but it's solid and has small removable Tommy bar for screwing it in the ground if required

To be honest Clive I have a couple of brollies a Korum one and another , a match one I’m not sure which at the minute as I’m out .The spike is solid an much better than what is normally supplied

As much as I hate to say it; I too have the Korum one and other than the pole breaking its done me proud for over 14 years. I replaced the original pole with one that came in a job lot and now mount that pole in a screw holder that is about 18" long.

I still have my old 50” Wavelock umbrella which is fairly heavy but wraps around me more than most; and keeps me well protected against the wind and rain; and is totally waterproof and doesn’t blow inside out as easily as a lot of others that I’ve used over the years.
The only downside is that it isn't a light umbrella; however I rarely ever need it as if it looks like it’s going to rain then I will normally stay at home
Occasionally I will use my other much lighter umbrella if I have a very long walk from the car; or I only need a brolley to shelter me from the hot sun.
