Nice review Graham, your comments on the quality pretty much tally with my views on the Barbel version of this rod which I have. It is easy to think that a company like Daiwa who make some very expensive (desireable) rods would fall short when it comes to the cheaper end of the scale - but the Proteus rod kinda proves this is a misconception.
Shortly after getting the Proteus Barbel rod I snapped up a Daiwa Twilight Barbel rod and going by RRP alone I was expecting a marked improvement. Cosmetically it is a tad better but for anyone on a budget the extra money would have been better spent going towards a better reel. I've fished with budget reels for years and only recently come to appreciate the value of a good reel.
