I have read a little bit about using slugs as a bait and only the black ones with the orange skirts. Anyone had any luck with this bait?

Yep, can be very productive free lined. I've found it best early season especially after/during rain. Take something to wipe your hands with;)

I don’t use any weights when free lining slugs for chub. I hold the line between my thumb and forefinger between the reel and the bottom eye of the rod and gently feed the line out with the current. Chub in fast flowing rivers will often bite hard and quick therefore bite detection while free lining shouldn’t be a problem. Size the hook to the slug/s a 2 or 4 will generally do.

I like to cast them upstream and trundle them back towards me, bites tend to be savage and they are quite dense so cast well without additional weight. if you do need to use additional weight then just pinch some large shot directly on the line, you can also fish lob worms like this and twitch them back towards you.

Excellent bait. Great takes, fun fishing. Used to use them a lot until the "Urgggh!" factor crept in years ago.

Reminds me of something that I read the other day, about another old-fashioned chub bait, which made me glad that I wasn't eating at the time.

Fishing for History: The History of Fishing and Fishing Tackle: Voices from the Past: Chewed Ox Brains for Bait (1903)

After reading that Slugs don't seem so bad :)

The River I fish is fairly small in places so I will definitely avoid added weight. I will try this as soon as we get a bit of rain to entice the slimy sods from there hiding places and post the results.

I like the sound of a savage take!! sounds like awesome fishing :D

:):) lol , I'll use the Carling I got for Fathers Day (I'm not drinking that dishwater) ... They could drink it all day long and still remain sober :w

Haha post it, I like the low end stuff so I can get up and fish :D

Although I will need a couple to pick up slugs when I'm not fishing and just relaxing. Then on the other hand when fishing picking slimy stuff up does not matter.

Wierd in what's therapeutic and what is not :p

lovely fish Chav Prof . ive never thought of using snails before , i suppose theres more meat on them than slugs , once the shells off . sounds a bit messy though . think i'll bring my son to act as gilly when i try them , he can peel & hook mine :)

That's a lovely Chub!

How would you hook the snail?.

I'm off Fishing for the day tomorrow so going to pop out when it gets dark and try and get some worms and slugs and now snails.

Really excited and really want a Chub as I haven't caught one yet .

such a wonderful fish to look at.

I don't know if there is a right way, some break the shell, some remove the shell, I prefer to leave the shell on as that is how the fish find it naturally - I just hook what's visible.

Ok I will try and leave the shell intact and go from there as I imagine it could get quite messy breaking the shell.
