That's interesting - I'd thought it looks a bit diminutive for barbel fishing, but then, when I've used a pin for barbel it has been a 5" Stanton which, rightly or wrongly, seemed more up to the job. But as you can tell from my post, I don't know much about them.

A larger reel just offers a high line retrieval speed, which IMO is more important in long trotting than ledgering for barbel.
My reel of choice for ledgering for barbel is a Speedia de-luxe which is the same size as the truepin trotter, might be a slightly narrower spool if anything.
i can see that. I'm wondering if you dp your barbel legering on smaller rivers? I'm usually on the Trent, and while you can catch close in in some places, legering is more often a fs job to cast the distance needed. Not always though, as Binka used to demonstrate.

Always find it strange when some say that you need this reel for Barbel, this reel for trotting. The only centrepin I used for both was a Rapidex and it worked.
We do seem to get a bit bogged down by putting names and uses on tackle.
Lovely looking reel by the way looks like it’s modelled on a wide drum Aerial.

Fair enough. I'm quite flexible about what gets used for what, but I wondered what was the idea of the wider than normal spool, and the reel's small size didn't immediately suggest barbel fishing, and I imagine it's a pretty slow retriever when trotting.
It does look good though, which made me think I'll buy it and decide what to do with it later.
I think there must have been lots of copies made by various people. I have a very similar reel but with a narrower spool. It is unnamed and came from a tackle shop that was in Pettits Lane Romford which moved to Collier Row. I had it as a present some 30 years ago. I think the shop is still in Collier Row.

It's a bit strong to suggest that The Truepin Trotters are a copy of anything other than an Aerial. IIRC, the Fred Crouch reels started off as Fred Crouch Aerials, until Shakespeare (the copyright owner) told them to stop using the aerial name.
A group of independent makers also made very similar aerial type reels under the guise of Specialist Tackle. Freespirit also did a Freespirit Aerial, which didn't last long under the aerial name. They were also forced to ditch the aerial name.

Very expensive or dirt cheap and offer great fun in the right conditions.

I picked up this reel quite cheaply lately. Its proportions are quite nice in a dinky kind of way - only 3 3/4" across the spool - but the spool is very wide - just over 1 1/8". I don't know what the purpose of such a wide spool is; anyone know? What, if anything, would you think it best suited to?

, although you can use it for whatever you fancy. I have several or more pins with a 1 1/8th wide arbour. You'll find that with a wider arbour you won't get anything like the line stick you can get on say a 3/4 inch arbour.....especially when using a reel with line pillars! I would imagine your reel will have 12 pillars as the majority of reels do.
Garry Mills makes reels with up to 18 line lays and this very much lessens line stick in narrower arbours. I have a pair of the FJT reels he made, the trotter has a 1 inch arbour, and specialist has a 1 1/8 arbour and they have 16 pillars so line stick is negligable.
Personally I would have no issues long trotting with your reel...and for any species.
I noticed that you've carfully loaded the reel evenly across the arbour....imo, your wasting your time doing that, my advice is to load it as in goes on which is usually a heap in one spot or another.

Good to see some positive comments on this reel- I risked buying it without looking into it, which doesn't always turn out well. Yes - the line lay.......I've got a habit of waggling the fingers of the hand tensioning the line as you first spool it up back and to. Some kind of impulse to be tidy! But in use, the line can go where it wants.

When I think at the time I paid over £200 pounds for some of my centrepins and what is now available for a £50 or less there are certainly what appear to be some bargains out there.

If your talking buying brand new then your 200 quid reels will be far better than those fifty nicker reels.
If buying second hand, then sometimes it is possible to get those 200 quid reels for 50 quid!

Having read this thread with interest I wonder if anyone can help with info on the below reel.
It is a bearing reel with pillars and stamped 'Auger "Machatta"' on the reverse.
I bought it a few years ago for the princely sum of a pound purely to use the line guard on another reel.
It came with no handles and the ratchet is broken.
I tend to use it for carp fishing.

Cost wise, because I ordered it 5 or more yrs ago it's an absolute bargain....way cheaper than those rods last night Mike !
.Nothing like a new reel to give a strong urge to get out fishing lol.
