Update

Having held a team meeting last Thursday I felt it would be timely to update members about developments and also to clarify our hierarchy at Fish & Fly/Fishing Magic.

Firstly a little bit of history for new members;

Fish & Fly acquired Fishing Magic some 20 months ago from Magicalia Group following their announcement they were to close the site. The site has proven to be a great addition to our portfolio of fishing sites and we have been very pleased with the way the site has developed and with the general support and the large increase in traffic which is actually showing the largest growth of all of our sites.

The chart below shows growth for the last 12 months as per Google Analytics figures based on monthly visits.

visits09-10.gif

The various changes have not been without difficulty especially picking up the pieces of a site where advertisers and members had been told of a pending closure, the forced change to a completely different web platform and also the retirement of Graham Marsden as Founder and Editor of the site has meant some cultural changes as the overall management of the site now comes under the wings of the team at the HQ of Fish & Fly.

Hierarchy

Fish & Fly is privately owned and currently has 2 Directors myself and Dr Colin Bradshaw. If you want to contact us regarding a corporate matter, a constructive suggestion or indeed a serious complaint please email us in the first instance at directors@fishandfly.com

We then have the other members of our management team at HQ consisting of Paul Sharman, Group Editor, Sofi Wolstenholme, Manager Member Services, Matt Daymond, Creative Director and Phil Broughton our Head of Sales and Marketing.

Paul as Group Editor is responsible for Editorial Strategy over all of our sites. (He is a very keen coarse angler!).

You can contact any of the above by emailing info@fishandfly.com or by using the menu tabs on all web pages.

Within FishingMagic our Content Editors are Geoff Maynard and Jeff Woodhouse and they report directly to Paul Sharman. They are always grateful to receive contributions from members for publishing and these can be submitted via the menu tabs under the ‘contact’ button.

It is perhaps worth mentioning that all of the team fish apart from Matt who is keen to learn!

Moving forward we do anticipate expanding our editorial team perhaps in specialist areas such as carp and we will keep you informed of any developments in that area.

FM Forums

These are very popular and are a very important resource for both members and guests with a vast number of posts on a wide number of subjects. They are the heart of our sites and we never lose focus as to the value of the contributions made by members to keep them lively and up to date.

The forums are regulated by fairly standard terms and conditions that are designed to protect both us as owners and you as members and to also ensure that posts meet certain reasonable criteria. We do ask that any complaints about the way the forums are run are in the first instance notified to us as quite often there are misunderstandings or they relate to issues that are best dealt with privately.

With our forums we feel we are in the ‘hospitality’ business where we provide you with the ‘facility’ to both be entertained and to entertain with as little interference from ‘management’ as possible. We want to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible, and like all good ‘landlords’ we want to be beetling away in the background and certainly not dominate the conversations on the other side of the ‘bar’. Our contribution (apart from the fixtures and fittings) is to provide regular news and features for your entertainment and discussion and to make sure the ‘door is always open’ and the ‘plumbing works’. The moderators are there to ensure that a friendly spirit is maintained and fair comment is encouraged.

If for some reason the moderators are unable to deal with a particular point then all members have the option to email either info@fishandfly.com or in a serious instance directors@fishandfly.com. We do actually appreciate constructive criticisms or ideas to improve the service we offer and we will always respond!

Both myself and Paul Sharman plan to communicate more frequently in the future and to keep you posted with regard to developments and our plans to improve further the experience of visiting Fishing Magic.

I hope the above goes some way to clarify the ethos we are trying to generate and I would repeat how much we do appreciate and value the contributions made by members both within the forums and with articles etc.

We are investing a lot of time and money at the moment in new initiatives for members and guests of all our sites and we should be in a position to outline them shortly.

In the meantime enjoy FishingMagic and your fishing and if you are visiting Sussex give us a call!

Richard

I for one would like to thank Richard for putting up this post. If nothing else it should help to clarify the hierachy situation for members, and points the way forward as to how FM will be in the future.

I have been one of the biggest fence-sitters during the 'troubles', and I suspect, like many others, have perhaps been frustrated and/or disillousioned by a perceived lack of direction for the site.

I would urge those who have 'left' the site because of what has or hasn't gone on in the past to read the post, several times if necessary, and then decide if the site is or isn't for them.

To go further, I would appeal to those departed members who were regarded as the heart and soul of the site to reconsider their decision to leave. A lot of members looked up to you for advice and guidance (and not a little humour) Particularly the likes of me, with no previous experience of writing but able to gain invalauble feedback from your comments and encouragement.

Those of you with comments, suggestions or anything else about the site have now been given the contacts to make your feelings known. I'm not saying that everything you want will happen, but within the constraints they have, I'm sure the team will do everything they can.

Never forget the FM is your site, but if you're not here, it can't be.........

Just to thank you for your support for FM.

We are very interested in feedback from Members and the recent survey
was very helpful and in the main supportive.

All we want to do is work with the members to build on what has been achieved to date and feedback is very helpful when considering various issues.

I am a keen coarse fisherman myself by the way having been a member of Copthorne Angling Society in Sussex for 55 years and my last two fish were a PB Barbel and a PB chub!

I would encourage anyone unhappy with things on here or with good ideas for improvement to email me at directors@fishandfly.com and we will give our full attention to the points raised.

Best wishes

Richard

I guess in some cases, thats because they're no longer here....

Thanks Richard,

Whilst it may leave questions unanswered for some, I appreciate the insite. Through the transactional period of the site, and the subsiquent difficulties, I've remained 'on the fence'. I could see and feel there were issues, but didn't want to 'jump ship'.

This is a step in the right direction for me.

Thanks for the update Richard.

Yes, there clearly has been an increase in traffic on the site and we are seeing new members introducing themselves on the forum.

From a commercial point of view this is very encouraging - FM needs 'footfall' to attract revenue from advertisers, without who the site would not be viable I am sure.

However, I am sure many members would agree, the soul has gone from FM and it lacks a certain feel.

The soul clearly went when Graham retired. Graham was FM.

What FM now needs to do is replace that soul and feel with an appropriate figure head. Some one who is respected by our fellow brothers of the angle. I appreciate this is not an easy task or one that comes for pennies, but until then there will be 'something missing'.

Further to this, the forum was 'kept alive' by a number of core members. Some of them left recently and some have gradually slipped away over the last couple of years. There may have been 60k members and umpteen thousand guests, but the forum was held up by less than 100 members as an estimate. To add to this it was those same members that organised and attended fish-ins and contributed the bulk of articles. A significant number of those members have slipped away taking 'the heart' of FM with it.

Richard, if I can give you an analogy - Do you want FM to be the 'MacDonalds' of the online angling world (high turnover, mass market, faceless, impersonal, product not that great, etc) or would you prefer a high quality establishment catering for a more sophisticated pallet, warm and inviting with a personal touch and offering 'speciality dishes' for it's regular customers?

Having said all that - IT IS UP TO THE CURRENT MEMBERS TO MAKE FM WHAT IT NEEDS TO BE if the FM team can provide the platform for us to do it.

Matt

No, Mr Spiders...
As stated before (on other posts) I feel I've done enough to gain membership.
Other opposing members threatend my claim with the last line of defence.... The treasurer.
Pointless! I've been married and divorced, therefore no amount of finacial demand will shock me or frighten me off....... So I consider mysefl in!

Any how ... Don't take this thread off topic.

'Off Topic' is what the PaSC do best.

Could that possibly be the reason that some of the old core members slipped away?

You have to wade through so much **** sometimes, that it isn't worth the effort, perhaps?

hmm....not quite the 'soul' I was looking for Geoff.
What I am saying is - there is the platform, it's always been here, all a member has to do is walk up to the light and shine. Whether that's organising a fish-in, a match, writing an article, or whatever they want to do.

So what were you looking for? It's not mine/our site to dictate what you want from it. You tell us if you want to arrange something and we'll (Geoff and myself [the other JEFF ]) will be happy to help with promotion or whatever else it takes.

FishingMagic is yours, everybody's, you put the soul into it.

Totally agree Monk.

And now it up to us all to make sure that the brilliant legacy left by Graham continues to thrive and grow...

I'll certainly be doing my bit with a few articles and hopefully another Severn Fish In pencilled in for early March next year. The traditional time for monster barbel and zander...

Matt,

This should hopefully help you with any perceived 'soul short-fall' in this thread.

Not one of my best performances admittedly, but a gutteral rallying cry for our times nonetheless...
