Coarse fishing is generally more gregarious as well, I often find people I know at the bankside and can spend as much time chatting as fishing. Not that fly-fishermen are stand-offish, I just don't meet people as often stalking the river with a fly as I do stalking a lake with a lure.
In the end, any fishing I can get out to do is the fishing I love.
Know what you mean Bob - any fishing is better than none at all!
The 'gregarious' part is a bit of a 2-edged sword.
Sometimes I just want to chill, relax and unwind - the last thing I want is to be 'sociable' - all I want to do is concentrate on my fishing and RELAX! - and what happens - some gibbering old fool sidles up and starts a conversation and - b*88er! - missed another bite! "Missed one there" - he observes needlessly. When this has happened 3 times I REALLY start to get wound up - .... - breathe deeply, relax, switch off, tune him out, - .... - "You catching much?" I enquire - "No - my swim's gone dead", he says. "Well you won't be getting much standing here talking to me will you", I comment, "Best try again - perhaps with a change of rig" I helpfully comment - hoping he'll take the hint and p*ss off - so I can get back to concentrating on relaxing!
This is an advantage in fly-fishing - you can be a lot more independant - people tend not to sidle up to you when you are flinging around a #8 with a budgie on the end -
caveat custodiens - leaving you alone with your thoughts - even on a 'commercial' trout fishery. The situation is even less likely to arise when stalking a brook with a #4/5 and a nymph or dry fly just because there's nobody else around - hopefully!
Taking people out of the equation (where's the shotgun?
) - the simplicity of fly fishing is part of the attraction. There's so much less between you and the fish - rod, reel, line, leader and fly.
No bank sticks, pods, indicators, beepers, floats, weights, rigs, hairs and bands, - all of which give a staggering number of 'degrees of freedom' with consequent sources of success - or failure!
Yeah - I'm playing a bit of Devil's Advocate - it's just that sometimes I think the 'Technology' gets in the way of the fishing - it's really just man & fish with a bit of line in-between - all else is tackle marketing!
It all depends
why you want to fish on a given day - what you want to get out of it - fish or peace of mind - or even conversation!
