Its a nice idea but I really do need to thin out my stuff. Its criminal that I have several really good eg rods that I've hardly ever used and doubt I ever will again now. Its not the money....its the space I need. I wish my kids were interested but they're not.

I'm happy to give away the mid range stuff but I'll be damned if I'll let my Hardy's end up pawed over by some dump goblin.

Can anybody recommend a way of sending rods by post ? I understand the PO are a bit precious about long parcels now.

Royal Mail have changed the length limits they apply which makes longer tubes difficult/impossible to send. However, Parcel Force limits are more generous. The best courier I've received rod through has been DPD. However, good couriers tend to cost a small fortune for a regular Joe to send a rod. They may also impose different limits if you've not got a business account.

A quote I found in a newspaper piece today ....

....... Montaigne “I want death to find me planting my cabbages, neither worrying about it nor the unfinished gardening.”

Carry on as normal, fish until you drop dead. When that happens you will not be worried about where your well used and well loved tackle ends up!
If it's anything like the house and tool clearance I carried out on my in laws house it will be over the tip.
We have told our son that when the time comes just take a few memory bits and then get the house clearance people in for the rest.
The fishing tackle can just be dumped, he has no interest in it. He does have an interest in my collection of fishing books and he already knows the value of some.
I wonder if fishing will still be allowed in the future if not then all our tackle is worthless.

Howl !

I think I might have to go "collection only" though I'll happily deliver within a reasonable distance like 25 miles or so....or meet somewhere mutually convenient which I've done before a few times.

A keen person will drive to collect the right gear. I drove to get a rod I wanted to a place south of Aylesbury - Upper? Lower? Greater? Missenden, something like that.
I made a day of it. Had a sandwich and a coffee by a canal near Tring, a place that trings a bell ho ho for anglers. I later found myself in a bizarre world of high hedgerows, tiny lanes and private roads with character detached houses and lush gardens. The seller, a retired London dentist, led me through the house - I had to hurry so as not to lose sight of him - to the giant conservatory looking on to the koi pool, where we chatted as his curiously young far-eastern wife served us tea and biscuits. I've walked into the world of Midsomer Murders, I joked. (I also thought of Singapore before the Japanese invaded, but I kept that to myself.) They made some episodes of that at other properties in the road, he replied.
On the way back, the satnav led me through a totally different world of drab housing estates and scratty countryside. Buyer collects....in this case, collects an interesting little glance into how the other half lives, and a mint Shimano Diaflash 14', a late model with the poxy metal reel bands replaced with 100% secure composite ones. Collect your rods and see the world, I'd say.

I am visiting my sons in laws in Missenden this weekend, like you say it's a slightly upmarket area.

HS2 is there a bigger white elephant, how to waste 200billion pounds. 200billion pounds is my estimate a bit more accurate than the governments total cost.
Getting back to the question in hand I have only ever sold one rod where buyer collects. That was a as new cane rod that sold for a few £100 and the buyer didn't want to risk a delivery service and a drove 100 plus miles to collect.

Skip, Gerrards cross and uxbridge angling club hold an annual tackle auction, as with all auctions quality items fetch very good money.

Fellow TVAA club Gerrards Cross and Uxbridge District AS have arranged a fishing tackle auction.
G.C.U.D.A.S. tackle auction will be held on Saturday 6th October 2018 at
DENHAM GREEN ACADEMY
NIGHTINGALE WAY
DENHAM
UB9 5JL
Viewing from 11.00am
Starts 1.00pm sharp
£3.00 entry with catalogue
NO BUYERS FEE.
Approx 450 lots covering all types of angling.
For further info and a list of some of the tackle on sale see their website www.gxudas.co.uk.
If you're not busy Saturday pop along and have a look.

These auctions have not been held for the past 2 years due to COVID restrictions. I have attended in the past and they employ a professional auctioneer.

Failing that I can put you in contact with my friend Paul who sells tackle on eBay for a small fee.

I only sent one rod once, the bloke the other end said it arrived all crushed and bent but the rod survived, I wont send a rod now, too much hassle and expense. I had one bloke drive quite a long way for one rod, he made it a day trip out at the same time. But it is auctions for me or nothing now, no hassles involved.

Which auctions do you use?

I use 2, one was a bit bargain basement but good for picking up the odd bargain and the other has two arms, one a sort of more household goods and the other arm more up market. They have a fine art and antique sale once a month and I try to get my old cane bargains in there and a bit of art work I buy occasionally. They always tell me they don't do well with fishing goods but I usually persuade them and they usually sell with some profit for them and me. I think they sniff at it a bit including my pictures, it depends who is on the "door", one bloke has not much of a clue but if I get the owner he is more likely to take a punt on me and my "junk"!
There are specialist angling auctions around, they have specialist angling auctions about once every 6 months or a year or a month sometimes. Its worth googling for these, they might be near you, I don't use them but would like to, they require me travelling to London or further and I cannot warrant all that cost and bother so I try to stay local but for you, have a google. Failing that google auctions and your area, I am sure you will find one or two, give them a go, try them out first with a couple of rods or reels or whatever, see how the land lays and which auctions you like or do best in. Once you try it you will get more used to them and how they work. Mind you they do charge a premium, 17-22% or something like that but, I don't mind, as far as I am concerned I am paying for all the hassle removed from me.
If you have a lot of stuff too sell and don't want all the bother of advertising, wrapping it all up and dodgy postal fees etc., they might be for you. Just take your stuff along after checking their valuation times on line, they don't charge for that and then see if they will accept your item/s. That's all you have to do and register with them with your bank details as well so they can send you money. You can even view the auctions on line with some of them, "easyauctions.com" and watch your items sell or not from home. However, I like going there and make a bit of a day out, usually with my mate and we have a bit of a laugh at the same time.
Over to you...

Thanks for all that info.

My brother is always looking at and bidding at fine art auctions specializing in ceramic. But over the years as picked up some bargain cane rods at smaller out of the way auction houses. I know he as a number of cane carp rods that he is hanging on to for investment.
Will have to ask him about the finer details of the auction world.

There don’t seem to be any auction houses near me so will have to make it a day out somewhere.

Have a good google, you might find something, if it is far, maybe email them first, send pictures to see what they think, they may give you valuations/estimates by email. Then you can work out if it is worth a trip, nothing to lose with a few emails and pictures apart from a bit of time.

To be honest I would quite happily swap half of my tackle for a decent set of golf clubs, at least I would use those. Unlike most of my fishing tackle.
