Just getting into fishing, so far I have bought 3 carp rods and a feeder rod. First plan is to get out in these last few weeks to try and catch some pike off the local ponds and canals. Will be dead baiting and lure fishing.

Question is what kind of reel do I need as it's like a mine field with all kind of prizes. Am I best to have bait runners and a fixed spool?

To be frank I dont think its too important. Use what you have as long as you have strong line and a wire trace. A bait runner can make life easier but if you dont have one just fish with an open bail arm and the line tucked in an elastic band tied round the rod blank immediately above the reel to stop it unwinding untilyou get a run on deadbaits.
Have a good look at the PIKE ANGLERS CLUB website on handling pike and unhooking. Mine of information.

A reel big enough to take heavy line is the way to go. Size 40/50 /60.
