is something i havnt done for a few years now.my mate at work who i occasionally fish rivers with asked me i fancied a session or 2 before the rivers close on 15th march.so weather depending we're off on a few winter outings.i've asked santa for a new pair of thigh waders as my others split.(i do have a pair of neoprene chest waders which are ok but think theyre a bit heavy to be honest) as i love trotting for grayling as well as legering for chub and barbel.so i'm going to dig my thermals out and targeting any milder days in jan feb and 1st half of march. ;)

Yes, I would stick with the neoprene ones too (and you will stick to them LOL).

And I would suggest that swim at Collingham we discussed.

I bet it is the same one. Gravel bar just downstream of the bridge. I used to put an envelope through the letterbox in the pub (Collingham Arms?) door with my day ticket money. I did it for years and never saw a bailiff. Latterly the newagents issued day tickets.

I've had some lovely days there initially catching chub on luncheon meat and wasp grub cake. Then lower down for barbel, below the closed section of the woods. Latterly I fly-fished for grayling from the gravel bar in Jan and Feb. A friend fishing Czech nymphs had one almost 2lb from under the near bank at the side of the island.

Hope that you have a great day! (y) :)

yes spot on.i'll be trotting about 10 feet off the gravel bar towards the faster water to the right.day tickets are still available from the post office at collingham.i was once approached by a member of wetherby angling club but once i showed him my licence and day ticket he just smiled and shared a few tactics with me. ;)

That patch and the pool where the paper mill pipe was between Boston Spa and Newton Kyme were my hotspots once I was 16 and old enough for a moped. Then when I got a car I branched out to downstream of Newton Kyme and also out towards Malton.

Happy days :)

Gosh yes - I had my first big chub there when still at University in Leeds. A monster of 3 -6 :)D), on a cheese paste on a huge Goldstrike hook ...

I am always happy to tell younger anglers that the good old days whose passing is mourned by some old farts weren't always that good. Back then the chances of a 5 lb Yorkshire chub were about the same as being struck by lightning .

I used to fish luncheon meat & wasp grub cake for them and have a photo somewhere of my first 3lb Collingham (or anywhere) chub. The deeper channel on the golf course side was my hotspot. Forty years later chub of over 5lb could becaught from the tiny River Dearne that was devoid of fish in the 1970s.
