The Environment Agency is giving young people in Cumbria a chance to take up Britain’s most popular participation sport, with two junior angling days during half term.

The venues are Atkinson Pond, Crook, near Windermere, on Tuesday 30 May and Mirehouse Pond, near Whitehaven, on Wednesday 31 May.

The events are open to anglers of any ability aged 11 to 18. Qualified coaches will be on hand to teach fishing techniques and give important advice on how to help protect the waterside environment and the welfare of the fish you catch

Jo Ratcliffe, Fisheries, Recreation and Biodiversity Technical Officer, said: “Angling is a terrific sport. We want to give more youngsters the chance to learn about it and how to enjoy it. Taster events like these are an ideal way for children to get an introduction to the sport, and after that some of them may take it up and become regular anglers for years to come. It is also a chance for newcomers to get advice on how to improve their skills.”

Angling is a healthy, inclusive sport that appeals to all ages and backgrounds and has social, environmental and economic benefits. Not only is it a relaxing, fresh-air pastime but it is also good for lifting people’s mood and increasing self-esteem.

Recent evidence shows that organised angling can play a cost-effective part in reducing youth offending, anti-social behaviour and truancy.

All coaching and equipment is provided including fishing tackle and a rod licence for the day but you should bring warm, wet weather clothes, sensible shoes and a packed lunch.

There will be two sessions on each day – 10am to 12.30pm and 1.30pm to 4pm.
