Gardner Tackle’s Alan Stagg enjoyed a terrific chub session, culminating in the capture of a 7lb plus fish. Alan recounts the story of the fish in his own words:

“I’ve just had a good weekend session chubbing on a southern river.

I dropped a good fish on the Saturday evening, just after hitting the bite, but I returned the following afternoon and took a small fish on the float, which weighed in at around 3lb 8oz. I then returned to the same swim and bagged a fish just after dark weighing 7lb 3oz. It was fish I hadn’t seen before and one we didn’t recognise, so I am very pleased!

I caught the fish using my usual mag-aligner rig: 10lb Pro Carp main line, 2oz running lead and 14in of 10lb Gardner Speciskin with the outer skinned completely stripped back to reveal a supple braided inner. The hook was a size 12 Mugga with an Enterprise Tackle mag-aligner grub slid over the shank of the hook. I fished this in conjunction with a PVA bag containing around half a pint of white maggots.

The bite was a wrap round and as soon as I picked the rod up I knew that a big chub was responsible. The fight lasted about five minutes and as soon the fish surfaced I knew it was a good one; in fact it was one of the longest chub I have ever seen and it was in great condition.”
