This is a quite splendid book. A lot of it is about Tony’s quest for giant carp all over the world, and the efforts too of some of his friends, but there’s plenty more besides – catfish and sturgeon for a start.

You will look at the pictures for hours – hundreds of superbly spectacular pictures, not just of fish, but also of the Grand Canyon, of animals and birds, of the Ozzie outback, of Spain, of Thailand, of tigers and waterfalls.

And alongside all this is an entertaining text of his adventures. The stories tend to concentrate on the actual fishing and whilst there’s nothing wrong with that – on the contrary – it would sometimes have been nice to learn how he managed to get himself to the waters he has fished. How the arrangements worked. How much time he spends fishing. I’m assuming that he doesn’t hold an ordinary 9-5 job. Or if he does, then how he does it would be seriously interesting!

The writing itself is very fine, with real observational touches that are original.
