Gold Label’s stiff rig material which, they say, “is extremely smooth and knots much more neatly than other similar materials.

“Having tied your rig, to achieve a 100% straight link, it is safe to apply steam (from a kettle) to the material, pulling tight as the material cools. We have conducted break tests with out line-testing machine to confirm no reduction in strength after heat is applied in this manner.”

Stiff rigs became popular quite some time ago, being one answer to the age-old problem of wised-up carp ejecting baits before they could be hooked when they sensed that all was not as it should be.

So the stiff rig and the hinge rig was born, which is made from very stiff (inflexible) monofilament and, in some instances, hinges on a ring or swivel.

FISHINGmagic VERDICT

GLT’s ‘Stiffy’ (can’t think how they thought of that name!) is one of the better stiff rig materials and all the better for being available in three different strengths and three different colours. Cheaper than many too at £ 3.95 for a full 70 metres.

It does indeed knot more easily than other stiff monos I’ve tried.
