Ulsterman Darren Clarke may have to pull out of the Deutsche Bank Open after injuring a thigh muscle whilst trout fishing on a private stretch of Hampshire’s River Test.

The injury happened on Monday when he bent over to unhook one of the trout he caught. He has pulled out of the pro-am tournament which takes place a day before the start of the European Tour event in Heidelberg on Friday.

Clarke went for treatment on Wednesday after struggling through nine holes of practice when he was told it would be very unlikely he would be fit enough to play in this week’s event and in the Volvo PGA championship at Wentworth, which starts next Thursday.

“”It’s improved a lot in a day, though,”” said the world number 14. “”I’m going to wait until the morning to make a decision.””
