Every youngster caught at King’s Lynn AA’s first junior fish-in of the year, staged at the Norfolk club’s on-form Shepherd’s Port fishery on Sunday. The only question mark was over the highlight of the day. Was it the smiles on the faces of the anglers of the future – some of whom had never been fishing before. Or was it the moment when an over-enthusiastic pupil snapped off club secretary Mike Grief’s feeder first cast, with a crack that echoed round the lake..? The day was organised by Lynn AA junior coaches Gary Hewitt, Rick Hewitt and Mick Goodale, with help from Mike Grief, fishery bailiff Rod Hicks and a few mums and dads and senior members. Mike began the day with a talk on rigs, mixing groundbait and feeder fishing. Then the youngsters took to their pegs, armed with whips, feeder rods and a generous selection of hook and groundbaits provided by event sponsors the Tackle Box. Despite the slightly iffy Bank Holiday weather, the fish were soon on the feed. Dale Hart, 12, managed two bream of around 2lbs apiece under the watchful eye of Rod Hicks, who was on hand with the landing net. Jimmy Brooks, 11, landed a 2lbs 2oz bream and a few roach in a 3lbs 9oz net. Ryan Cowell, 8, weighed in around 25 roach for a net of 2lbs 1oz. Danielle Cowell, 11, and Kloe (corr) McKenran, also 11, teamed up on the next peg to put 1lb 14oz of roach on the scales. Martyn Jenner, 13, weighed in 1lb 14oz of roach. Timothy Fenton, managed 1lb 6oz, while Sian Hewitt, 10, netted 1lbs 10oz off the next peg. James Hewitt weighed in 9oz, while sisters Kayleigh and Sophie Williams were neck and neck with 4oz apiece, with Craig Arlotte chasing them all the way with 3oz. After the weigh-in, Mike paid special thanks to event sponsor Geoff Baker, who runs the Tackle Box, in Tower Street, who generously donated maggots and groundbait.
