Big Zeds from Bury HillBury Hill’s Zander fishing has kicked off to a great start this winter with over 25 doubles reported in October, topped by Michael Simpson’s 14lb fish a couple of weeks ago. The first week of November has also seen a flurry of big fish reported led by Penny Savage whocaught a huge zed weighing 13lb this week, which was made all the more memorable by the fact that this was Penny’s first ever attempt at predator fishing and her first ever zander. Under the watchful eye of Pro-Fish Big Fish tutor Eric Bailey, Penny joined four other ‘wannabe’ predator anglers on last Saturday’s predator course, which was her birthday treat by partner Fred Heath. After a short talk in the boathouse on the do’s and don’ts of predator fishing by Eric and a brief chat regarding tackle and bait, the group moved to pegs 45-48 on the Old Lake where they all started to fish. Fishing peg 47, Penny legered a small roach head on a light leger rig and single hook rig to the back of the lilies, catching her prize fish mid afternoon. Overall the day was a great success with everyone catching a fish or two, which included the odd pike despite missing quite a few runs. Another angler to bag a double this week was Graham Bounds, Graham chose to fish peg 11 on the front bank ledgering small roach deadbaits and mackerel tails to the open water. Bagging four fish, Graham’s best fish of the day was an 11lb 5oz zander. Stewart Ball also caught an 11lb 8oz zed on half a mackerel (tail end), which he fished on a leger rig close to the island from peg 36. |
