Police are appealing for anglers to come forward after human remains were fished out of a canal.
Underwater search teams were called in on Sunday after a human arm was found floating down the Grand Union Canal in Loughborough, Leics, in a bin bag. Divers were still scouring the waterway for clues yesterday, as people living along the cut spoke of their shock at the grim discovery.
The area, near Belton Road bridge, is popular with pleasure anglers, cyclists and dog walkers.
Detective Superintendent Bob Small appealed to residents to come forward with information.
“If you saw something suspicious in the area or have any information which you feel could help the inquiry please get in touch,” he said. “Even the smallest detail could have vital significance.”
Maria Chalk, 54, the owner of kennels on the towpath where the package was found said: “It is upsetting. We have seen other things in the water in the past few months like that and I think the police are very interested to know what we have seen.”
Keith Hartley, 52, landlord of the Albion Inn close to the scene, said police told him the package was an arm in a well taped-up black plastic bag.
“It is not an every day occurrence but we do see rubbish that floats down the canal all the time,” he said.
Anyone with information should call police on 0116 222 2222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
