The human head found in the stomach of a giant cod off Australia’s northeast coast in August has been positively identified as that of Michael Peter Edwards, 39, of Cairns in Queensland.
The ironic twist to the tale is that Mr Edwards fell off the same boat that later caught the huge cod, police said.
Mr Edwards fell from the fishing vessel Loray in the early hours of August 27, about 60 miles northeast of Townsville.
His disappearance was investigated by police and the boat had to stay anchored in the same spot until police could be lifted on board to investigate. Later, a cod measuring well over 4ft in length was hauled on board. Then two days later workers at a filleting factory cut the cod open to discover the head.
Detective senior sergeant Peter Wright of Townsville CIB said forensic experts had used dental records to identify the head as belonging to Mr Edwards. He said, “We are not treating it as suspicious and the cause of death is now up to the coroner.”Police were making no further enquiries.
