In this weeks Angling Times Des Taylor has the knives out for the internet again, with the comment that “the internet trogs were giving me hammer yet again…….” This follows his comments on women match anglers which so incensed FISHINGmagic’s own lady match angler, Wendy Perry, she started a forum thread that had a go back at Des. Wendy, who recently came second in her section and 7th overall in the recent Fishathon, had this to say, “…….he shouldn’t write things like that, it’s not fair. As a lady angler I don’t think for one minute I could beat a man at fishing, I just love fishing, what is so wrong in that? And if some ladies are good at it then they shouldn’t be pulled apart for it.” Winding people up is Des’s mission, and he makes a fair old job of it, so he shouldn’t really complain when the s**t comes flying back. So it was with some amusement when I read in this week’s AT his, some would say offensive, comment about the ‘internet trogs’, and that his recent back operation prevented him from worrying about their ‘offensive comments’. God, that’s rich coming from Des who has a degree in being offensive! What I also find amusing is the fact that Des obviously thinks that it’s only the anglers on the internet that give him stick. I think Des would find that anglers everywhere would be responding in exactly the same way if they had the instant and unrestricted ability to do so as is the case with the internet. There is no doubt in my mind that if anglers had the same unfettered access to newspapers and magazines he would be reading exactly the same thing there. Only the week or month’s delay, the waste bin and the editor’s delete key prevents that. Des, your column in AT gives you a platform for having a go at whatever takes your fancy, so don’t get ruffled because the internet gives your readers a chance to have a go in return. Like you, they’re just speaking their minds, like more of AT’s readers would if they had the same opportunity and the ease in which to so, as they have on the internet. Okay, some go over the top, but many would say you’re a dab hand at that too at times. The best thing about the Net is that it’s open to all, including Des, to air their views. That he chooses not to is down to him. |
