Kayak angling will be well known to most FishingMagic regulars who have enjoyed the highly instructive and entertaining features on the subject on the site by John Olliffe-Cooper.

If you are into the sport then you may be interested to know it has recently been announced that the very first Angling Trust and Crazywater Kayak Fishing Grand Slam competition will be held in Christchurch Harbour, Dorset on September 17th and 18th and thanks to Sembcorp Bournemouth Water, Angling Trust members will have access to a prestigious fishery normally only accessible via season ticket.

Prizes for the best individual bass and mullet will also be awarded on the day. This year’s competition is open to Angling Trust members only so with just 40 places available book now and don’t miss out!

In addition to the new competition two dates have been announced for a kayak angling foundation course; the first on September 10th at Rudyard Lake, Staffordshire and the second on September 24th at Ladram Bay in Devon.

The course is to be run by fully qualified kayak angling coaches and includes all the essentials needed to get the beginner and intermediate safely on the water and catching fish. It covers kit lists, rescues, paddling technique, anchoring and fish handling plus a host of other useful information. Emphasis will be on the on-the-water coaching so expect to get wet, enjoy yourself and meet like-minded ‘yakkers.’

Here’s what some anglers who have attended previous courses have had to say about it:

“If you are a newbie like me, or even if you have just been lucky so far and take safety for granted, I would urge you to get on one of these Angling Trust courses. Eight hours of fun kayaking and expert tuition for less than £50 is really silly money for a full days course in anything.”

“I enjoyed the experience and I recommend it to all new kayakers, there is so much I learnt on the course. I travelled 200 miles to this course, and it was well worth it…”

Places are available now  with details on 0844 77 00 616 during office hours. Courses cost £46 incl. VAT for Angling Trust members and £82 incl. VAT for non-members.

September 10th 9.30 am at Rudyard Lake. Instructor: Simon Everett – 6 places.
September 24th 9.30 am at Ladram Bay. Instructors: Simon Everett and Paul Fennell – 12 places.
