A new coated super-braid hooklength material from Kryston thatattempts to overcome the tendency to tangle that is associated withstandard braided lines.
Super Mantis has extremely high abrasion resistance and a very lowdiameter for its given strength. It is a true hybrid hooklengthmaterial designed to be anti-tangle and yet retain the limpproperties of braid when the coating is stripped off.
Kryston Snakebite is similar, but the coating of Super Mantisoffers this unique anti-tangle property not previously seen withbraids, and is only half the diameter of Snakebite for the same breaking strain.
So far I’ve used it to make hinge-rigs and combi-links and beenpleased with the way it performed. But what has been especiallypleasing is that I’ve also used for a combi-hooklength when feederfishing for barbel and I have to say that it has been much lessinclined to tangle than standard nylon mono.
It is somewhat stiffer than standard mono with the coating intact, but I like this in the line because the stiffness is part of itsanti-tangle properties, and I have the limpness for a few inchesclose to the hook, where it counts, by stripping back the coating atthat point.
It isn’t easy to strip back the coating but got a lot easier witha little practise. The best way is to press on it with the edge of apenny on a hard surface and then try to slide the penny along theline. Once the break is made it was easy then to strip the coatingaway. DON’T do it with a sharp knife because the line is cut throughtoo easily.
Super Mantis is neutral in buoyancy, essential with somepresentations, but can be made to sink to various degrees by theapplication of Kryston’s own Drop-em compound. Available in AlgaeGreen (Super Mantis) or Gravel Brown (Super Mantis Gold) in 15lb and25lb strengths.
Price: £ 12.45 for a 20m spool.
