This splendid perch caught by Liam weighed 3lb 3ozs and was caught on single red maggot from ‘Kingfisher’ Lake, Merstone, owned by the Isle of Wight Freshwater Angling Association.

They kindly allowed schools including the ‘Barnado’s’ children, with assistance, to use the venue in association with a volunteer group of 3 Level-2 Angling Development Board coaches, Lee Davidson, Chris Renouf with 2 able assistants, Tom Martindale & John Woodall. This was part of the latest 6 week angling schools education project that the Isle of Wight County Angling Action Group provides to youngsters and schools locally.

Danny Williams, South East regional ADB Officer helped launch the latest course which started on the 27th September with an  elegant fly-casting demonstration that clearly ‘captivated’ the attendant young audience.

John Creaser, of the IWFAA has set up an attendant scheme that allow pupils completing the course to join the IWFAA the following year.

Becky Haydock, a manager at Barnardo’s Ryde Extended Services said “Liam Prevett caught the fish and is very proud as you can see from the photo. Liam is one of the children taking part in “Go For It!” – a programme run by Barnardo’s for children in Ryde.

“The programme gives children the opportunity to take part in activities that they would not normally have the chance to do such as angling, watersports, arts and crafts, music, tree climbing, ice skating and bowling.  Liam goes to Swanmore Middle School and is 11 years old.

“Him and seven other boys are currently taking part in an Angling Course organised by Adrian Nicholas (IOW Angling Trust).  The boys absolutely love taking part, and are learning many new skills.  We hope that some of them will take angling up as a hobby after the course has finished.”

WELL DONE LIAM AND ALL INVOLVED!
