17th June 2001
I am able to impart some good news for our river anglers, as fromlast Monday the entire stretches of the River Severn, as controlledby the Club at Atcham, are open. Such is the speed of changes inguidance from the authorities, it is sometimes a little difficult tokeep up. It was only Thursday the 14th of June, acting on suchguidance, that I had to place signs on the Atcham site informinganglers of the very restricted access we had. However, the change inguidance is to our benefit with the stretches now fully open.
First day on Lymmvale was its usual slow start for the majority ofmembers fishing there. My advice to them is again to discard thenormal way of fishing, and fish high up in the water. Using thismethod ‘Vale aces Mike Wilkinson and Kevin Shore bagged up, with amix of tench, chub and golden orfe. Kevin landed 18 tench, 7 chub upto 6lb-5-0 and orfe to 5lb-12-0, however it was Mike who landed thebiggest tench of the day, which pulled his scales down to 7lb-6-0.The sort of fish weights you get from this water are very special, and advice from water keepers Mike Wilkinson and John Stubbs is soundand given freely.
Another angler who wont forget first day 2001 on Lymmvale, isyoung junior member Ben Pinnington, who under the guidance of hiscarp angling guru Uncle Alan (Davies), landed his first carp whichweighed in at just over 10 pounds.
Last Sunday Tabley Mere gave up one of its best hauls to DaveInkson and guest. Between them they landed 39 tench up to 6lb-6-0,with Dave’s guest catching most with a total weight of well over100lb. Whilst moving about the water Dave reports seeing vast shoalsof rudd, and numerous carp with the biggest being a mirror which camevery close to the boat, with an estimated weight of 25 pound.
Tabley Mere is an awesome water which can phase anglers due to itssize, without tips and advice you could fish it for years and not dovery well. If you wish to get more information, and tips, give BazRhodes a ring on 0161 747 4350. Baz is also the official who takesbookings for the Mere.
The waters of Belmont Estate have had a steady start, with the’Method’ feeder scoring best for carp on Belmont Pool itself. It isof little surprise that the waters have not performed to their normalexcellent form, up until Saturday there has been no human presence onthe site at all since February, even bailiffing has been observationoperations from a distance. Once the fish have again got used to thepresence of anglers, things will improve, there is already evidencethat things are improving already.
It is extremely important that instructions on on-site notices areobserved, and where provided disinfectant foot dips must be used. This is a condition of our access, as well as a precaution againstfoot and mouth.
Bailiffs are out in force and they have been instructed to fullyenforce all Club rules, and will withdraw licenses if ruleinfringements are discovered. The Club will rigorously protect therights of all the members by clamping down on rule breakers, therehas already been a number of license withdrawals due to the use ofbarbed hooks and possession of tin cans on waters.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the police fortheir assistance in dealing with three poachers fishing on StathamPool last Wednesday night, the three officers concerned dealt withthe situation in an extremely professional manor.
I can be contacted on 411774.
