20th November 2001Spring Pool has given up some specimen fish to several of our members over the last week. Steve Harris landed a silver orfe of 4lbs from one end of the water, whilst at the other end his angling companion Dennis Brown refused to be outdone with a silver orfe of his own weighing in at 4lb-2-0. Amongst their catch of orfe were tench and perch, with some of the perch of specimen proportions. They attribute their success to the use of very small hooks, as the could not get a bite on anything larger than a 22.

Farm Pool remains in red hot form, with member Dave Fishwick landing 143 fish in his session. His biggest fish were perch, with one specimen weighing 2lb-0-0. This good form was confirmed by member John Getty, who reports a fish a chuck on maggot. John experimented a little and received good action from tench when he switched his bait to sweetcorn.

River reports remain very good. Member Gary Murphy, reported a brilliant day on Wincham Brook landing 7 chub to 2lb-8-0, 5 grayling to 1lb-8-0, 4 roach and 2 dace all around the half pound mark. Gary’s method alternated between stick float tactics and a small maggot feeder, he used double bronze maggot on the hook in each case. Gary will no doubt return shortly, as he was broken by four ‘big’ fish.

On the Severn at Atcham, Cliff Taylor landed 5 barbel to 8lb-4-0 and a chub of 4lb-4-0. Cliff’s fish fell to legered meat and corn. The rivers last week were reported as being in fine fettle, although the current weather forecasts may have a detrimental bearing on them in the next few days.

Around and about the local waters, form remains reliable and consistent. Over the last week the weather has been very still and extremely dull and for some reason these conditions suit the bigger roach, with many reported around the 2lb-0-0 mark from a variety of waters over the last week.

Carp action is still good, although there have not been many reports, which directly reflects the fact that there are fewer anglers on the bank. Belmont, Founders, Whitley and Village Pools are the most consistent, although it could again be a reflection of the popularity of these waters.

Lymmvale has settled to produce a range of all its species, although chub and orfe dominate the catches whilst the temperature falls. There are still good numbers of tench being caught, although not the numbers caught during the warmer months.

May I just point out to members that cormorant scaring activities are taking place on Lymmvale, Belmont Estate, Bentley Pool nd Whitley Pool. Operatives will be making use of starting pistols and other similar type equipment, and will endeavour to make anglers aware prior to operations.
