Overnight frosts are again dominating the fishing scene, however form has improved on the stillwaters with Farm, New and Statham Pools getting most use, with skimmers, perch and roach providing the action.
Whitley Pool is still producing carp of all varieties, with caster scoring best over a bed of chopped worm, although it is emphasised that fishing tight up to a feature is important to receive bites, some of which are very shy indeed. Bread is a very good alternative bait.
For those that wish to try for carp at this time of year, then members of old recommend either Whitley Pool, Village Pool or Founders Pool, all have previously produced in adverse weather conditions.
River action has been fast a furious for Tom Casey and Dave Shard. Earlier in the week they took the time and trouble to travel to our stretch of the River Severn at Abermule, and were not disappointed. Using stick floats, they fished from 12.30 pm to 4.15 pm and proceeded to land two small brown trout, one small chub and fifty, yes fifty, grayling to two pounds. This outing they describe as their best for a long time, and chalk it up as one of their red letter days.
Tom has also spent short sessions on the Severn at Rossall and at Wincham Brook, which both provided action in the form of dace, chub and roach.
Cormorants are inland again in substantial numbers. Operations to scare are in place on Lymmvale, Whitley, Bentley and Belmont Estate. If you spot these birds on and around Club waters you are perfectly entitled to scare them off by clapping hands, or any other innocuous actions such as waving coats etc., in order to protect fish stocks.
These voracious fish eating birds are on the protected list, and all must be aware of this. If you see these birds on any waters not known to have been visited by them previously, please give me a ring and let me know.
For those that do intend to go fishing over the festive season, maybe to try out that new piece of tackle given as a Christmas present, remember to wrap up warm, stay dry and let somebody know of your whereabouts.
