Founders Pool continues to give up its specimen roach, with the latest report coming in from bailiff Dave Shard. Fishing at two thirds depth with a variety of baits he landed a string of roach, with five of them around the pound mark and two just under two pounds. Amongst his catch was perch, and again some of them were specimens around the pound mark. Dave points out that he only dropped in on this water, knowing that the rivers were in flood and was very pleasantly surprised by his catch
However flood conditions didn’t put off members Cliff Taylor and the McNally brothers. Cliff, despite the conditions, travelled to the River Severn at Rossall Grange, where the river was lapping the top of the bank. Here, using legered boilie wrapped in paste, Cliff landed two barbel weighing 6lb 14oz and 7lb, pointing out that he lost a much bigger fish.
Paul McNally and his brother gave the River Dane a go at Manor Farm, action was far from hectic although they each landed a chub a piece, with Paul’s fish of 3lb being beaten by his brothers fish of 4lb.
Around and about the still waters fishing is still much of a muchness, although Village, Founders, Statham, New and Grimsditch the most consistent performers. Member Bill Bailey, reported a decent session on Statham Pool last week, despite gale force winds. He advises the use of hooks no bigger than size 22, light lines and small baits.
The Sankey Canal is very patchy at the moment, as found out by our Junior Section who had an absolute grueller of a match on there last Sunday, with the match weights measured on ounces. Winner on the day was Danny Holligan, second Nathan Keir, third Darren Moor and fourth Chris Edwards.
On the carp scene things are quiet, with not many specialist out at the moment. As an exception to this, Club official Phil Wain continues to fish, including overnight sessions regardless of weather conditions. Founders and Belmont Pools are his target waters, both of which he knows very well indeed. Phil has managed to maintain action throughout the year, and attributes this in no small part to his knowledge of the water.
