18th February 2002

Last week there was signs of things to come with the budding of trees and shrubs, the appearance of crocus and daffodils and the warming feeling of the sun on your back. However the brightness of the days were paid for by overnight frosts, which have had an effect on Lymm Angling Club fisheries.Despite the frosts anglers are more and more numerous on the bank, and their endeavours are mostly being rewarded.

Last Sunday bailiff Johnny Barton spent the morning on Spring Pool, catching perch up to 3/4lb, and was broken twice by fish which were unstoppable on his light tackle. Johnny believes the lost fish were either big silver orfe or specimen perch.

Taking a break from fishing to do a bailiff patrol on adjacent New Pool, he reports action on this water as slow but steady.

Village Pool was not unaffected by the frost, with sport average unless you managed to fish very close to features. This was borne out by Sue Jupp and her brother Sam Clark, when they had an afternoon session on the water last Friday. Both report action as very slow away from features, but a bite a chuck very close to overhanging trees, when fishing high in the water. Roach and skimmers formed the bulk of their catches, although Sam did lose a couple of carp.

Still recovering from the flu Steve Daley crawled onto Tabley Moat to do a spot of pike fishing. His efforts were made worthwhile by two fish caught in close succession, one at 9lb-8-0 and the other at 17lb-4-0. He chose to go to Tabley Moat, due to his chosen water Lymm Dam being heavily coloured and therefore unsuitable for pike fishing.

Tom Casey has again been in his Seventh Heaven, by again visiting the Severn at Rossall last week. The river was just six inches below the top of the bank, but this did not put him off. Fishing flavoured meat on the hook, using a fixed leger to present it, he managed to land five barbel ranging from 7lb-0-0 to 9lb-8-0.
