Water keeper Mike Wilkinson, reports that it is night anglers who are getting the best from Lymmvale at the moment. Tench, carp and chub are the species giving the best results with specimens of each banked over the last week.
Its ironic that most of the old fishing text books, even those written as late as the nineteen seventies, believed tench went into a kind of hibernation throughout the cold months, whilst carp did the same by semi burying themselves in silt and mud. No doubt these views gave solace to those who recorded numerous blank sessions back in those days, although I know of several anglers who took no notice of the text books of the time, and quietly went about the business of catching carp and tench throughout the winter, in total defiance of common beliefs.
Grimsditch Mill Pool continues to fish very well, although the biggest fish are again coming to night anglers. Club official Phil Wain, spent a couple of nights on there over the last week. He reports catching carp and bream. However, the fish of his session was a crucian carp of 4lb. Now this is a massive specimen of this species and I can vouch for Phil’s knowledge of fish, because I know a lot of uncoloured goldfish are mistaken for crucian carp.
Head bailiff Kevin Peers reports that Village, Spring, New, Belmont and Statham Pools are all producing more action than can be expected at the moment. Although he did point out that light lines and small hooks were necessary to make the best of these waters. Kevin also pointed out that Farm Pool was flooded, and remains so up to the time of writing.
Kevin also reports that it is pike anglers who are making the most of Lymm Dam at the moment, with very few anglers on fishing for other species. Two exceptions to this were two practising matchmen who last Saturday landed several fine bream off the match length, using long range feeder tactics.
Members are reminded that all rivers are closed to coarse fishing from and including the 15th March, as are some of our other waters, whilst others are only open to the holders of appropriate work party overstamps. Please read the information supplied to ensure that you only fish the waters you are entitled to fish.
Work parties continue next Saturday at Whitley Pool, commencing at 9 am, and offer one of the last chances to acquire an overstamp. If you cannot attend work parties on the set days, but wish an opportunity to earn an overstamp, then contact Mick Gater who may well be able to arrange some work to accommodate your availability. Mick can be contacted on 01925 861018.
I can be contacted on 01925 411774.
