WELL DONE TO the members of our Junior Section, who fared very well at the National Junior Angling Association match fished last weekend on Meadowview Fisheries. The team finished in second place which qualifies them to fish in the final at Birmingham on the 9th June. A special well done to Eddie McKenna, James Brown and Karl Green who all won their sections.

Long time angling administrator Brian Ellis has finally got his wife Margaret involved in fishing, and she is doing very nicely despite her inexperience. Fishing her favourite water, Spring Pool, she has landed a string of perch up to 1.5lb which happens to be her favourite species, silver orfe to 4lb and a specimen crucian carp weighing in at 3lb 4oz, the latter of which got hubby’s green eyed monster stirring.

However, this monster was quelled when in the same session Brian landed a 3lb 8oz golden tench, which he describes as a fish of spectacular colouration.

Whilst on the subject of Spring Pool, I report yet another bumper catch of silver orfe by Sue Jupp who last Friday landed 15, giving her a total weight of silver orfe alone of 54lb.

Shakerley Mere has been turning up some good bags of bream to night anglers. One such angler is John Emerson who reports landing numerous specimens ranging from 5lb to 9lb10oz. Whilst he admits they are not his target species, as he is a carp angler, he does say that they do give him action, and fish of that size are always welcome in his landing net. All these fish succumbed to boilie baits of a size that prevent takes from smaller fish. John also reports a good year so far in terms of carp action, with his best so far a common of 26lb.

Abbey Lake at Orrell is giving up some of its tench to anglers fishing early morning. Whilst tench are being caught midday it is the early birds that fare best. Currently bread and caster are the best baits, accounting for good sized roach as well as the tench. This water is only fourteen miles from Warrington Town Centre, and well worth the short journey up the M6.

On Whitley Pool action is slowly transferring to the shallower car par end, where large shoals of carp can be seen just under the surface in daylight. Again it’s early morning when tench action is at its best, often replicated at the end of the day when night falls.
