Last week I was able to inform the membership that Shakerley Merehad reopened. This week I can tell you that Founders Pool hasreopened, and this will be of particular good news to those who havea ‘gold’ overstamp, as that means they are able to fish itimmediately.
Founders Pool was one of the first three waters controlled by theClub on the Antrobus Golf Course site, although at that time weshared the site with no one, except the occasional meeting of theAntrobus Jalopy Racing Club, which only had six or so meetings eachyear.
Founders holds a good head of carp, which have been recorded up to27lb. The water also holds specimen roach and perch, with rudd, bream, crucian carp and the odd catfish to compliment these and addvariety.
Members who are entitled to fish this water are reminded that theyare restricted to the trackside pegs, and that the maximum stay fornight anglers is 24 hours.
Roach are this year’s surprise species with specimens reportedfrom the Sankey Canal, Statham Pool, Spring Pool, New Pool andVillage Pool. It’s fairly easy to deduct that the current conditionsmust suit these species, although the difference in their behaviourfrom one water to the next is graphic. For example, the big roachfrom Spring Pool and New Pool are predominantly bottom feeders, whilst at Statham and Village Pools they are feeding midwater.Perhaps this is to do with a trickle of foodstuffs constantlydripping from the surrounding trees on Statham and Village, whereasthis cannot be the case on Spring and New due to the lack of maturebankside trees. But who knows? Only observations made over a longperiod of time may give a clue to this.
Roach are also featuring strongly on Lymm Dam, Longbarn Pool andthe Sankey Canal, although more so at the moment on the Canal, wherethe fish dominating are averaging over 4oz, when last year they wereonly averaging 3 oz Again it could be that the current conditions aresuiting the bigger fish.
Several species of fish are beginning their spawning rituals, including carp and orfe. When this happens feeding becomes asecondary consideration, and angling can suffer accordingly. This iswhat is happening at the moment on some waters, and when you tie thisin with heavy rain and a cooling temperature, there is bound to be ahiccup in the angling performance of the affected waters.
However, it cannot go unnoticed that the warmth of the sun is verynoticeable now, and the first swallows of the year were spotted innumbers last weekend, boding very nicely for those halcyon days ofsummer we enjoy so much.
Club bailiff Phil Wain, enjoyed a pleasant day on Statham Poollast week, with his biggest fish a wild carp of 10lb-8-0. Thissession came as a well earned rest to Phil, who up to last weekendhad busied himself helping on the work parties.
Longbarn Pool and the Sankey Canal have produced good bags of fishover the last week, with the Sankey bailiff reporting catches oftench in all areas. When fishing the Canal from the Tip Road, pleasetake note of the sign adjacent the gate as it gives the time at whichthe gate is locked; thereafter you are locked in and a call out feeis applicable for officials to come out to release you.
Subscriptions can continue to be paid by post to the P.O. Box, orin person at Jimmy Shaw’s tackle shop on Evelyn Street SankeyBridges, or at the Manor Lock Public House in Latchford eachWednesday evening from 7.45 pm to 10.15pm.
Work parties continue on Saturday, there is still a lot to do andmembers are asked to assist. The party will meet, as usual, onWhitley Pool car park at 9.am.
I can be contacted on 411774.
