The Masterline Masterblaster Fixed Spool Reel (Size600)
The fixed spool reel has a number of advantages for newcomers tosea fishing, and for those making a return to this aspect of thesport. Firstly there is familiarity, for most coarse anglers willhave used a fixed spool reel for their usual fishing so the big fixedspool reel is a natural progression.
Secondly, and most importantly, there is the lack of overrunsusually associated with multiplier reels, which means that thebudding or returnee sea angler can concentrate on the direction oftheir cast and be able to achieve good distances with the minimum ofeffort.
Despite what the dyed in the wool multiplier man will tell you, inthe hands of the average angler the fixed spool reel will cast everybit as far as a multiplier and without any of the potential troublethat can occur with it.
The design of fixed spool reels for sea fishing has changed agreat deal in recent years and the performance of the current breedis vastly superior to those of years ago.
One has to wonder how Masterline can sell these reels so cheaplyat just under £ 30, which gets you a very competent sea fishingfixed spool reel.
For your money you get a long-cast, tapered design spool, madefrom aluminium, and a spare graphite spool that takes 380 yards of0.35 line.
The reel has four ball-bearings which makes it lovely and smooth. The handle and rotor have been balanced so there is little wobblewhen retrieving.
The front drag is smooth and powerful and can be locked up solidfor casting.
The build quality is solid and inspires confidence, particularlyfor a reel in this price range.
In practise I found the reel easy to use and casts of 150 yardswere easily achieved using a 5oz lead. And I am no expert caster!
Winding in was smooth and I felt in control at all times.
I can recommend this reel as being very good value for money andideal for the starter and the angler on a budget.
