Big catch of big bream to 9lb from A1 pits, near Newark for John Ledger and Mike Townsend on a short morning session

A1 pits is a complex of six gravel pits situated on the outskirts of Newark, Nottinghamshire and it was a Sunday morning when my fishing partner and good friend Mike Townsend and I decided to target the bream in No 4 pit.

Mike had already started to spod up when I arrived and I was a bit put out that he had not mashed my tea and carried my tackle to the swim (these young pups never learn).

Our method of fishing was indeed the method feeder with three red maggots on a size 12 hook direct to 4lb line. Prebaiting was Vitalin, dead maggots, casters, sweetcorn plus a mixture of various groundbaits.

After some 30 minutes Mike’s alarm went off and he was into a bream of 8lb plus (lucky sod I thought, I hope his reel drops off). Mine was soon to follow and for the next three hours we took some terrific fish, the biggest just under 9lb with an average of over 7lb 8oz.

As we both had to get back early we decided to pack in but the best was reserved for last as Mike’s rod took off and he was soon playing something much bigger than a bream.

The last fish of the day to Mike Townsend, a common carp, and what a beauty at nearly 25lb

It’s got to be a barbel I said to Mike, due to the fact the Trent flows near to the pit. But as I climbed up the bank for a better view I could see the golden flanks of this huge fish near the surface and it was indeed a common carp of just under 25lb and one of the nicest looking carp I had seen.

Just before we left after under four hours fishing I remarked to Mike to check his lottery ticket. But what a morning; around 200lb of fish in under four hours and no small ones.

Neither Mike nor myself have been back since that day.

Being as it’s the first one in the series and it was John’s idea to send in a ‘memorable catch’, both John and Mike win FISHINGmagic caps and tee-shirts.
