Anglers in the Midlands are about to have their own monthlymagazine, care of the David Hall Publishing stable.

‘Midland Angler’, priced at £1.50, will hit the shelves onSeptember 5 and will be distributed throughout the Central TVregion.

New magazine for the midlands

The content will be exclusive to the region, and include columnsfrom star Midlands anglers, including Shimano consultant Jan Porter,England manager Mark Downes and stillwater match ace Grant Albutt.

Stillwater ace Grant will be revealing the tricks that have seenhim take the region’s match scene by storm in his ‘Trade Secrets’column.

The magazine will be edited by *Gareth Purnell. He’s a Midlanderhimself and a former news editor of Angling Times and editor ofImprove Your Coarse Fishing.

“This is a really exciting step forward in angling publishing,”said Gareth.

“Only a regional title can offer anglers true value for moneybecause we can make every page of direct interest to anglers in thearea.

“Our vision is to create a community spirit and to get anglerstalking and keep them talking about the news, views and instructionthat directly affects their fishing.”

‘Midland Angler’ will be printed in a tabloid (A3) format andeditorial content will include news, instructional features, a matchand carp section and interviews with star Midland anglers from bygonedays.

In the first issue Ken Giles talks about his views on the changesthat have happened in angling over the last 25 years.

There will also be tackle reviews, spotlights on in-form Midlandsfisheries which can be booked for club matches, and a fishery formsection which tells you what venues are really fishing.

‘Midland Angler’ will be also launching several prestigiouscompetitions in its first issue, exclusively for the region’spassionate fishermen, and sponsored by some of the biggest tacklefirms in the business, including Sensas, Preston Innovations andMaver.

There will be monthly awards, leading eventually to four anglersbeing crowned Midland Match Angler of the Year, Midland Club Championof Champions, Midlands Carp Angler of the Year, and MidlandSpecialist Angler of the Year. Angling clubs in the Central TV region(map attached) should start to send in their club match results as ofnow.

There will also be the chance to put your fishing questions to theregion’s top anglers, such as Dave Harrell, and Gareth is urginganglers to send in Midlands-related angling questions and views now,for the chance to pick up some tasty tackle prizes from Shimano andLeeda.

Midland Angler was first published in June 1946 as ‘the officialorgan’ of the then-huge Birmingham Anglers Association, making it theoldest angling magazine in existence. The first issue was edited byBill Coyne (now deceased) and priced a 6d (2.5p). It ran monthlyuntil the last issue in July 1964.
