Steven Pyle, professor of recreation and leisure management at Johnson & Wales University in Providence, R.I., says several factors have influenced the sport’s growing popularity as a holiday activity.

“As travellers accrue more disposable income, they are seeking new recreation experiences,” he says. “Sport fishing is a model leisure activity – it offers expectation, relaxation, and in the end, a reward. And over the past five years, women have learned that it’s a fun way to spend quality time with family and friends.”

Fishing is a sport where the basic skills can be learned quickly, to the point where a newcomer can catch fish at the very first attempt.

This is especially true where novices hire professional fishing guides because they guide through every step of the way, which is why so many holiday makers who try the sport get hooked for life.
