The Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Review Group has recommended doing away with the closed season on rivers in spite of a strong lobby in opposition.
And now Edmonton MP Andy Love, a keen fisherman, has joined the ranks of those opposing the ban by signing a House of Commons Motion urging the government to reject the recommendation. The motion has gained cross-party support.
‘It’s crazy to suggest that we scrap this vital period for the riverside environment to allow commercial interests to make money from the minority of anglers that want to fish for an extra three months in the year.’ Said Mr Love.
‘I’m urging ministers to ignore this misguided recommendation of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Review Group and to keep the status quo which has served us well.’ He added.
