Encouraging youngsters, boosting fisheries funding and the state of our rivers are all on the agenda at Britain’s first-ever National Angling Summit being held today.
Sports Minister Richard Caborn is expected to underline the Government’s commitment to our sport, at a meeting organised by Reading West MP Martin Salter.
Officials from the National Federation of Anglers, National Federation of Sea Anglers and the Environment Agency will be around the table at the House of Commons.
In his letter to delegates, Labour backbencher Mr Salter said: “As you may know I have recently been appointed as Dick Caborn’s parliamentary adviser on angling and this will hopefully be the first of a number of events aimed at building better links between angling and the Government and exploring ways in which angling can be developed and enhanced as a major sport.”
While the meeting is being held in private, FISHINGmagic has had sight of the agenda.
Items tabled for discussion include youth development, boosting funding, the state of river fisheries, predation on fish stocks and increasing angling’s political clout.
