Rob Hughes has been appointed manager of Carp Team England in an agreement that, it is said, will secure the future of English representation in the international arena.
“We’re very pleased that Rob has agreed to take on the role” announced Dick Clegg, International Events Manager for the Angling Trust’s Coarse Competition arm. “Rob has a long history in competition carping having ‘been there and done it’ on the international stage and there aren’t many anglers that have the experience of both management and competition that Rob has. He’s ideal for the job and we look forward to a great future under his guidance.”
Hughes is a well-known face on the competition carping scene having fished for England on a number of occasions in professional events and in 1996, along with Simon Crow, the duo won the World Carp Cup in France to become the inaugural World Champions. In 1999 he set up the British Carp Angling Championships, an event which he controlled for 12 years.
Rob commented:
“I’ve had an incredible angling career and involvement with competition carping for a long time, so to be given the honour of putting together and leading a national squad is something I will absolutely relish. I’m under no illusion that it will be easy, but everyone, competitors and supporters alike can rest assured that my aim will be to bring some silverware back home to England.”
Dick Clegg added:
“As we welcome in our new manager I would like to take this opportunity of saying a big thank you to the previous management team for their tireless work, and also to Korda for their financial support over the last three years. They did us and their country proud.”
Hughes will commence immediately and will be looking to field a strong team for the first event of his tenure which is the World Championships in October at Caspe in Spain.
