SANKEY PAIRS
Tench and big bream are plentiful on the Sankey-St Helens Canal atPenketh but they must be related to Houdini, the get free and escapeso easily.
Reed beds line both sides of the canal and the fish tend to foragefor food while coming out of the reeds, but if they feel a hook theybolt back into the cover – often snapping the line!
John Turner did well to win the Sankey Pairs Open with exactly14lb despite losing two large carp and a brace of tench from his pegon the Tip Road stretch.
The 46 year old who fishes for Liverpool-based Dick Cleggs RaysTackle, used a 15 metre pole with worm and caster to catch fourtench, a crucian carp and a smattering of skimmers.
Steve Butler (Gaswise Liverpool) was second with 10lb 8oz thatincluded a 5lb bream with two tench and then came John Cheetham(Gaswise Liverpool) on 9lb 13oz.
MESCAR OPEN
Good Samaritan John Easton got his reward from missing the first hourof the Mescar Open match to assist a fellow angler who was feelingunwell and had to be taken from the fishery by ambulance.
Eventually John – fishing for Image Liverpool – got his acttogether and won the sweepstake with 10lb 12oz.
Sport was slow and John used a maggot feeder on a light leger rigto catch carp to 2lb at intervals during the contest.
COPTHORNE
Martin Liptrot scored a good win in gale conditions when he lifted13lb 8oz from peg 46 on the Square Pool in the Copthorne FisheryOpen.
Fishing for Lostock Tackle Box, Martin pole fished at 13 metreswith red maggot over pellet and had a sprinkling of silver fish in amainly carp catch.
MEADOW
Pole fishing continues to dominate match results at Meadow ViewFishery where John Tompkinson was a clear winner with 23lb 4oz.
He was drawn in the wide bowl on Thrush Pool and found his fish at11 metres with maggot hookbait.
