A howling masked mob of 30 demented hunt saboteurs attacked a nurse and other anglers as they enjoyed a days fly fishing at the Bank House Fly Fishery at Caton, near Lancaster.

Resuscitation nurse Lucy Belson from Kirkby Lonsdale, along with other anglers at the fishery, was enjoying a peaceful days sport when the mob of about 30, dressed in black and wearing black masks, verbally and physically abused them.

The angry gang broke fishing rods, hurled stones at the anglers, punched other anglers, including punching another woman in the face, and several cars were damaged.

Lucy Belson was told to pack up and go home or she was going to get wet. She decided to leave the fishery but the mob ran towards her, threatening her with bats and blocks of wood. They shouted abuse and knocked her about, smashing her rod.

The day before the incident was the start of the grouse shooting season and the sabs were thought to have been at a loose end after finding the shoot they were targeting had been called off due to lack of birds.

Lucy Belson commented, “I was very shaken at the time but now I’m angry. They are cowards and I certainly won’t be frightened to go back to the lake. I love fishing and have been doing it since I was a little girl.”
