When anglers are not actually out fishing or talking about it their next favourite pastime is reading about it. If you are like me and enjoy curling up with a good book on a winter’s evening with a nice glass of a decent single malt then this little gem by David Watson is for you.
Unlike so many of today’s books, this is not a “How to do it” sort of book, so those simply seeking instruction would do to look elsewhere.
This book is a delightful ramble through the angling life and some of the other life experiences of the author. The tales are pleasantly interwoven with a gentle humour, and time spent reading this book sprints by all too quickly.
The author’s passion for his beloved Scottish hill lochs shines through like a beacon and his descriptions of the wild places he fishes in are wonderfully evocative. You wish you could be up there fishing with him in the traditional way of “short line, show it to them, and whip it away”.
The book has additional depth by being balanced by some of his other life experiences, which serve to remind us that there is more to people than simply fishing.
This is a lovely personal book that mixes all the above elements in a delightful way. The author shows how his fishing is both a wonderful pastime and at the same time acts as a bulwark against the stresses of everyday life that can affect us all.
A dear friend of mine once said that every good thinking angler will have one good book in him.
On this basis David Watson must be a good thinking angler.
Highly recommended.
