What is fishing all about? Well my theory is it’s all part oflife’s great tapestry, but mostly the nice bit?

Chris Bailey with trophy and certificate
for this year’s match

Last Sunday saw a welcome return to Threemilestone of The RoyalOak, a London based club of anglers who, like many others, now makean annual pilgrimage to Cornwall to fish some of the country’s topstillwaters.

The association between the two clubs was set several years agowhen members of each club met through a fishing event. As normal thefishing was mixed with a fair amount of social interaction which leadto new friendships and the rest is, as they say… history.

The Oak this year came with a strong squad led by club captainDave Hawkins-Farr, who was on his first Cornish safari. Theremainders of the squad were old pals who were out to avenge theirdefeat in last year’s match.

The T.M.S AC squad was led by club captain Chris Bailey and madeup with anglers from the three winter league teams. One noticeableabsence was Don Kellow, who is not enjoying the best of health atthis time. New team caps went to Mark Venables and the ever-popularRupert Hall.

The catch rate at TMS suffered due to the high temperatures on theday, with the top weight on the day going to Barry Gillam of TMS with11lb 4oz. Barry happily gave up the TMS match superstar award toRupert Hall who won his first match cap, and did it in style weighingin more than many team regulars including his dad. Many regulars tomy column in FM.com will be aware that our Rupert suffers with DownsSyndrome and his effort and commitment is a lesson to us all.

Rupert Hall with his
man of the match award
The Royal Oaks Man of the Match went to Jeff “Victor Meldrew”Spencley. Dear old Jeff is a real star, he and his wife Vikki are thelifeblood of The Oak squad, and damn nice people to boot.

The end result? Does it matter really? Fishing and friendship wonthe day, as it should do.

There is more to life’s Tapestry than winning. Taking part and remembering friends who can’t be there is the most important thing.

Threemilestone AC welcomes all visiting clubs to come and be apartof the greatest thing of all, fishing friendship. So if you and asquad of mates are coming to Cornwall give us a call, you never knowyou may even beat us….or maybe not…….MATTER DO IT?

Till next time, keep it tight and tidy
