The Angling Trust has stepped in to help save healthy fish due to be destroyed at a Bristol lake where angling is being banned.

Today, WWF-UK, The Angling Trust and RSPB welcomed confirmation that Government will reform the water abstraction licence regime, the national system that approves water being taken out of the environment for use by the public, businesses and farms. Dominic Gogol, Water Policy Manager, WWF-UK, said: 'Our rivers and their inhabitants are under increasing pressure due to the amount of water taken out of our rivers. To its credit, the Government has listened to the serious concerns we have raised, and brought forward proposals to reform our outdated water abstraction regime.

This is an open letter to the Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss MP, Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. It follows on from Martin Salter's recent FM article on the same important subject.

I first had a dabble on Kevin Nash's Church Lake back in the summer of 2011 when I visited for 48 hours with Steve Briggs. Despite losing an absolute whacker at the net I fell in love with the place straight away. It is stunning, very tranquil and its own piece of carpy heaven.

I often get involved in debates that question the most important part of a carp angler's armoury. I could write a book about this because I have lots of different views on it, most of which centre on reading the signs and understanding carp.

FM was - as ever - delighted to receive another article from the one and only Kev Perkins, but disappointment soon set in. Kev says he's hanging-up his quill and defecting to the Forums section only. Let's hope his fertile imagination will get the upper hand and compel him to keep those excellent stories and anecdotes coming...
