I'd have been around fourteen or fifteen years old at the time of one particular night session that saw me return home, on my bike, winding and bumping my way across the reclaimed land that separated the club lakes from the housing estate.

My first outing of this new season was a bit of an anti-climax, though these days the Teme isn't the easiest of rivers for barbel, but it's certainly one of the most scenic. Steve was my guest, a fellow Springsteen nut and a man from the East End of London who now lives in Sheffield. We had lots in common apart from fishing. He also knew his stuff when it came to barbel fishing but he'd never fished the Teme: catching was going to be important but it was not the primary driver.

The month of May was all about Bank Holidays, catching up, spending time with my girlfriend and family and fishing for crucian carp.
